The Nebular Theory
It all started with the universe made up of huge clouds of dust, ice and gases. These clouds of dust, ice and gases are called nebular.
The cloud move in random and swirling motion. The gases are primarily hydrogen, helium and other ionised gases. These gases make up most of the universe. However, hydrogen was in the most abundant element in the nebular system.
Atoms of the gases are large enough to experience gravitational attraction which pulls them together. As more atoms of gases are pulled together, the gases fall inward and gather in a cluster of gas balls. The clouds begin to shrink. As the atoms of the gases gather themselves in a cluster, they lose their potential energy and gain kinetic energy. According to the kinetic theory, as they gain kinetic energy, their temperature get higher and the cluster of gas atoms becomes hotter. As more gas atoms are pulled in, the temperature of the cluster increases. As the cluster of gas gets more heated, atoms begins to condense and turn white hot called Protostar.
Over a long period of contracting and heating, the temperature of the Protostar becomes sufficiently high to start nuclear fusion reaction. This is a reaction where the nuclei of hydrogen and helium gas atoms fuse together to produce heavier atoms. At this stage, energy and pressure release from the nuclear fusion reaction balance the gravitational attraction on the gas atoms. There is no further gravitational pull of gas atoms and the protostars turn into Stars.
These stars have different sizes depending on the mass of gas atoms pulled and condensed to form them. There are billions of stars in the universe.
During this same period, the largest mass of gas atoms are pulled together at the center of the the nebular system, by gravitational attraction from the largest protostar. Further contraction and condensation of the largest protostar, results in a sufficiently high temperature to start nuclear fusion reaction. The biggest start is born, called Sun.
The sun is therefore a massive star. The sun does not emits and radiate energy because of its temperature, but does so by nucleara fusion reaction taking place within it.
During the same period, the gravitational attraction begins to pull the particles of the dust and ice together to form four Rocky inner planets. In the same way, particles of ice and gases are also pulled together to form four giant gas planets and a very small one.
You can learn about planets by tapping on the link
These nine planets move in elliptical orbit around the sun and they do so because of the sun's gravitational attraction and on them. There are about 63 moons formed to orbit some of the planets including the earth.
The left overs in the course of the birth of the sun and the planets. Most of these left overs are rocky and are considered " Planets that never made it to the final stage"
These left over debris are meteoroids , asteroids and comets. Presently the total mass of all these left over debris in and around the solar system is probably less than the mass of the Earth's Moon.
